What's New? Update – May 25, 2004

Galway, Ireland The male survivor conference that will be held in Galway September 25th-26th (sponsored by MASC) now has a name: “Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse - Gender Specific Issues”.

The organisers tell me that among the offerings and issues to be addressed are:

Sexual Abuse and Male Identity
Difficulties around disclosure and accessing support  for male survivors
Sexuality, homophobia and shame
Sexual abuse of males - the Irish context
Male Rape
Survival strategies
Male survivors addictions, self harm and suicide
Burn out and compassion fatigue in working with sexual abuse survivors
Survivors workshop

Disclaimer - I was informed by a colleague in Chicago that a company in the Chicago area is using the name Next Step Counseling Referral Service. I usually don’t care about others using the name Next Step (which we registered as a trade name over 20 years ago), but in this case there is so much similarity and overlap that there is a real possibility of confusion: people assuming that they are connected to us.

I communicated with them almost a month ago, asking how they suggest we resolve this situation. To date I have received no reply. This makes me doubt their professional ethics and fairness. Therefore, I want to state:

WE HAVE NO CONNECTION OF ANY KIND TO A GROUP THAT CALLS ITSELF NEXT STEP COUNSELING REFERRAL SERVICE.
