What's New? Update – January 10, 2003 Happy New
Year to all. Let us hope that 2003 brings peace to the world, justice
and healing to all survivors, and compassionate wisdom to those in power. I am in the
midst of working on the revised edition of Victims No Longer.
The deadline is March 1st for a projected publication date in early 2004.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 15 years since it’s
original release. Since this work is so demanding of my time, this message
will be relatively brief – limited to a few New Year’s recommendations: For professionals
working in the area of male sexual abuse recovery (or any professional
interested in the subject) I highly recommend Josef Spiegel’s excellent
forthcoming book, Sexual Abuse of Males. It offers an impressive
review of the biological, psychological and sociological research as well
as a compassionate approach to treatment issues. Richard Hoffman
has released a powerful book of poetry, Without Paradise. For
more information, you can link directly to Richard’s web site from
this one. I was impressed
by Syl Jones’ book Rescuing Little Roundhead (published
by Milkweed Editions in Minnesota). It is a well-written work about an
African-American male survivor. Vicki Polin
is the driving force behind The Awareness Center, which addresses sexual
victimization within Jewish Communities, and offers resources for Jewish
survivors. They are preparing a new web site at
www.TheAwarenessCenter.org
If you can’t wait until it is ready, try the old URL at http://hometown.aol.com/vickipolin/ For anyone
who wants to see an amazing tribute to the human spirit, I highly recommend
the Australian film “Rabbit Proof Fence”. This tale of three
young Aboriginal girls, part of the “Stolen Generations” is
not easy to watch (and I don’t recommend seeing it alone), but I
can’t imagine that anyone with a heart and soul could fail to be
moved by it. Some other
web sites you may find useful (I haven’t had time to update the
links) include: Survivors
of Spiritual Abuse (SOSA) at http://www.sosa.org/ The Bright
Side- Wings of Support http:http://www.the-bright-side.org
is a non-profit organization offering services to anyone suffering from
a mental disorder, depression, or a crisis situation. TBS is entirely
run by volunteers and all services are free. A number
of New Englanders who are active in sexual abuse recovery issues, including
Robin Moulds, Richard Hoffman, Thom Harrigan and myself, will be offering
workshops at the True Colors Conference (on issues of gay, lesbian, bisexual,
transgendered and questioning youth) which will be held at The University
of Hartford (CT) March 21-22, 2003. For further information, contact Robin
McHaelen at rpassariello@snet.net.
That’s all for now. Wish me luck on the writing. |
